Response to climate change.

KOGAS, Korea’s leading low carbon energy enterprise, has quantified emissions voluntarily by maintaining a greenhouse gas inventory since 2008, and has carried out activities to reduce energy in respective workplaces to join the international effort to prevent global warming.

Implementation of Emission Trading

Based on the experience gained during the first planning period (2015~2017) for emission trading, KOGAS continuously strives to reduce greenhouse gas. In particular, since the second planning period (2018~2020), KOGAS has contributed to the national greenhouse gas reduction policy by implementing a quota auction system, and by preparing for measures accommodating governmental quota reduction.

※ Quota Auction System: Compulsory purchase of 3% of the average quota during the second planning period.

※Outline of Emission Trading
Government allocates annual greenhouse emission limits to businesses. Businesses with a remainder of emission allowance are permitted to trade this remainder with businesses that exceed their limits

Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Activities

KOGAS has reduced fugitive methane emissions figure by developing a more reliable and region-based fugitive methane emission coefficient for natural gas industry in 2017. Additionally, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated in the facilities, KOGAS has been exploring reduction projects and ideas since 2020. These projects are continuously managed as part of the “greenhouse gas reduction implementation program”. As of 2023, 52 implementation tasks are being managed resulting in a significant amount of reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
