Hydrogen Business Development Strategy

KOGAS will lead Korea’s hydrogen economy from production to distribution and supply of hydrogen energy.

Since the transition to new renewable energy to achieve carbon neutrality is becoming a global requirement, abundant and eco-friendly hydrogen is gaining attention as a future energy source. In light of this, KOGAS is taking the lead in establishing hydrogen-related infrastructure to invigorate Korea’s hydrogen economy.

KOGAS, Playing a Key Role in Korea’s Hydrogen Economy

KOGAS laid the legal basis for including hydrogen in the scope of the company’s business in 2018 in order to lead the hydrogen industry in Korea, and was selected by the government as the exclusive hydrogen distributor through a public offering in July 2020. Going forward, we plan to play an active role in the entire hydrogen industry from production to sales through a step-by-step strategy.

KOGAS Hydrogen Business Development Strategy

KOGAS will lead the transition to a clean hydrogen society by establishing a green hydrogen ecosystem in 2040, based on the gray and blue hydrogen network established by 2030. By 2030, we will produce and supply blue hydrogen without greenhouse gas emissions by introducing carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology along with the establishment of hydrogen infrastructure such as base-type hydrogen production bases and hydrogen charging stations. Furthermore, we will create an eco-friendly hydrogen society by importing 1.21 million tons of overseas green hydrogen by 2040.

*Gray Hydrogen: Hydrogen produced by reforming natural gas. Also called reformed hydrogen or extract hydrogen.
Blue Hydrogen: Hydrogen that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by capturing carbon dioxide generated in the process of producing gray hydrogen
Green Hydrogen: Hydrogen produced by electrolyzing water with electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind power

Detailed Strategy of Hydrogen Business

Establishment of Hydrogen Production and Supply System

KOGAS will establish a production and supply system for blue hydrogen and green hydrogen.

Move left and right

Establishment of Hydrogen Production and Supply System
Establishment of Production Base Building 25 hydrogen production bases by 2030 to provide affordable and stable hydrogen supply
Overseas Production & Import Building 17.1 GW of renewable facilities by 2030, and introducing 1.21 million tons of green hydrogen by 2040
Establishment of Distribution Center Establishing hydrogen distribution center to ensure transparency in hydrogen trade and safety of hydrogen distribution

Laying the Foundation for Hydrogen Transport

KOGAS will construct a total of 132 hydrogen charging stations by 2030 to promote the supply of hydrogen vehicles, an eco-friendly transport method.

Move left and right

Laying the Foundation for Hydrogen Transport
Hydrogen Charging Stations for Cars Building 32 KOGAS and HyNet-run hydrogen charging stationsby 2030
* Started operating the first KOGAS-run hydrogen charging station in Gimhae in July 2021
Multi-fuel Charging Station for Commericial Vehicles Building 30 multi-fuel hydrogen charging stationsfor commercial vehicles based in logistics hubs by 2030
* Multi-fuel charging station that can fill hydrogen cars and LNG trucks by providing various fuels such as hydrogen, LNG, and CNG
Liquid Hydrogen Charging Station Building 90 liquid hydrogen charging stationsby 2030
* charging station that vaporizes liquid hydrogen, and supplies it to hydrogen cars
