the Enron debacle occurred, corporate ethics
has become a hot topic for many corporate
managers worldwide. Unethical decision-making
has now come to be regarded as a serious problem
that can render a company bankrupt in the
worst-case scenario.
As a result of the spreading of consumerism
and the penetration of the Internet deeper
into everyday life, stories of unethical
corporate practices are being transmitted
quickly on line. And as we can see in the
effort by international organizations to
institutionalize ethical management at the
international level and the introduction
of ethical management standards by America¡¯s
Ethics Officer Association and the International
Organization for Standardization, global
standards for ethical management are becoming
more practical and related laws and regulations
are being strengthened. So unethical or
corrupt companies will be subject to harsher
punishments while those embracing ethical
management will enjoy a variety of benefits
and incentives.
Being able to forecast and adapt to such
changes in the management environment proactively
is the essence of corporate competitiveness.
That is, active involvement is no longer
a matter of choice. Rather, it is a requirement
for surviving competition in the corporate
world.
In an effort to develop and practice ethical
management suitable to the surrounding environment,
KOGAS will focus on ¡®transparent and honest
management¡¯ and ¡®fulfilling its duties as
a responsible member of the society¡¯ to
realize the goal of practicing transparent
and honest management and thus become a
clean energy supplier in genuine terms.
In so doing, executive members of the company
will lead by example to make the notion
of transparent and honest management a way
of life for all KOGAS employees.
To this end, we have drawn up what is called
the ¡®Clean Kogas¡¯ code of ethics.
The code, which comprises 4 major areas
and 11 core values, sets forth criteria
and principles for making ethical decisions
in the workplace. A section called ¡®Our
Promise 30¡¯ deals with do¡¯s and don¡¯ts for
corporate managers and workers in a detailed
manner.
By introducing the fair contract administration
system, the multi-faceted performance evaluation
system, the IR meeting system and the volunteer
social service program, KOGAS has made it
mandatory for all its employees to follow
transparent management philosophy.
